Let the Games Begin: Playing with Purpose

Kickball, Volleyball, and Fishbowl, oh my! Hope House students love participating in after school activities at New Song, whether it’s on campus or at a nearby park.
If there’s one thing guaranteed to bring everyone together with energy and laughter, it’s kickball! The kids are always thrilled to get out on the diamond! One afternoon, all of the nine kids and adults living at Hope House piled in the campus van and drove to Eagle Park near Nashville for a kickball game. The bases were loaded and it was eight-year-old Amere’s turn to kick. As KK (6), Brie (13), and Mr. Isaac held their positions on the bases, Amere booted the ball and scored four runs for his team!
“Volleyball is also a big hit with our students,” said House Mom Abby. “We were playing a game here in the New Song park one day when Amiri (11) dove for the ball and had the winning hit over the net. Everyone erupted with cheering!”
At the end of each game played, the kids demonstrate good sportsmanship by lining up and giving high-fives to the opposing team and say, “Good game, thanks for playing!”
Early in the school year, the students were introduced to a game called “Fishbowl” which is three rounds of charades with different challenges each round. The students really enjoy acting their parts during the game! Mentor Katie Hill shared, “the kids’ creativity and imagination really come out in this game, and they absolutely LOVE it!”
Activities at New Song have a greater purpose than keeping the kids fit and active. Valuable lessons are taught including perseverance, team cooperation, and how to handle both defeat and winning. Great memories are also being made through a bit of friendly competition!
