Instilling Work Ethic

On any given day, you might see one of our boys or girls sweeping a porch, pulling weeds from a flower bed, or helping clean the dining room after a meal. At the children’s home campus of New Song Mission, work isn’t punishment—it’s purpose.
The K-8th grade children who live and learn here on campus are discovering that work is a gift from God — a way to serve, to grow, and to care for the place they call home.
“I like to work,” shared 9 year-old Melody, who recently helped with an outdoor project beautifying New Song’s campus entryway. “It’s fun to be outdoors with the other kids, helping with projects.”
Each child has small responsibilities around the house, from keeping their room tidy to helping with chores that benefit everyone. It’s amazing how much pride they take in doing their part.
Our boys and girls also have the opportunity to help with age-appropriate groundskeeping and maintenance projects across our 100-acre campus. They earn a small amount of pay, and even more importantly, they earn confidence and experience the joy that comes from adult affirmation of a job well done.
As we watch the kids work on campus, we can see their determination and focus on each project, whether it’s raking and weeding around flowers in a mulch bed, mowing in straight lines, planting flowers, or vacuuming the living room carpet. These lessons aren’t just about chores; they’re about character.
We’re teaching the children at New Song to take initiative, to do their best work even when no one’s watching, and to finish what they start. Those are values that will guide them for the rest of their lives.
It’s about far more than clean floors and mowed lawns — it’s about shaping hearts to understand the importance of responsibility, perseverance, and being grateful for the surroundings the Lord has given them. When kids learn that their efforts matter, they begin to see themselves differently — as capable, valued, and loved.
This is just one of the many ways we walk beside our children each day — teaching, guiding, and growing as we do life together side by side.
