Beyond the Classroom Walls: A Day at the Farm

Beyond the Classroom Walls: A Day at the Farm

The students at New Song were more than ready for a change of pace, and a day at housedad Isaac Lawrence’s family farm delivered exactly that. From the moment they stepped out of the cars, it didn’t take long for the energy to pick up. There was space to run, animals to see, and plenty of excitement to go around. Some were nervous, while others were talking about it for weeks, but regardless of how they felt, they were ready to tackle the day!

What stood out most about the day wasn’t just what the students did, but how they stepped into it. Sitting together for a picnic gave them a chance to slow down and enjoy being outside, but it didn’t take long for them to eagerly eat their food so that they could move on to the most exciting part of the field trip. That eagerness carried into learning about the bees, where the students got a close look at how they work together, each one playing a role, and how they protect their hive. It was a new way to see teamwork in action, and it sparked a lot of curiosity and questions.

Next up were the baby goats, which quickly became a favorite. The students had the chance to hold them, and that’s where things got fun; some kids couldn’t get enough, while others weren’t so sure. Either way, it kept everyone laughing and eagerly waiting for their turn. The baby pigs were just as big of a hit. Getting to hold them was another highlight, and the kids were all in, crowding around for their turn and enjoying every second of it. At the end of the day, the kids gathered around for lemonade slushies and ice cream, thanks to Isaac’s mom! The students were thrilled to take this trip and learn so much in just one day.

What made the day stand out wasn’t just the animals – it was the experience as a whole. The students weren’t sitting still or just listening; they were moving, exploring, asking questions, and trying things they hadn’t done before. Days like this are a big part of what we mean when we talk about equipping children for life. It’s about giving them opportunities to step outside of their normal routine, build confidence, and enjoy learning in a hands-on way.

At New Song, we want our students to grow in every area of life, and that includes moments like this. In the name of Jesus, we’re committed to creating experiences that stick with them, days that are fun, meaningful, and full of opportunities to learn and grow. By the time they left the farm, the kids were tired, a little dusty, and already talking about their favorite parts of the day; and that’s exactly the kind of outcome we hope for.
