The Bravery of Brie

Brie, 13 years-old, sat quietly off to the side of the wooden YMCA basketball court watching two teams compete against each other made up of the boys and staff members Mr. Joe and Mr. Bob of New Song.
“Occasionally someone would ask Brie if she’d like to join in, and at first she was dead set against it,” shared Mr. Bob.
But after several weeks of watching the boys teams competing against each other, Brie gathered up the courage and came out on the court to play.
“I was scared,” admitted Brie. “I haven’t played a lot of basketball. I’ve mostly been into gymnastics. But I really wanted to do it! Mr. Bob kept telling me to believe in myself and to be strong, and that’s what helped me to get on the court.”
Since that first day of participating, Brie hasn’t missed a game yet! With the weather now warming up, she plays on New Song’s outdoor basketball court about every day, and now is giving the boys a run for their money!
Developing confidence within our students is one of the most important things we can do in the ministry. Boys and girls who have been through difficulties oftentimes feel insecure, as we all can, especially when trying something new.
The other day Brie hit game winning shots in two consecutive games! We are so proud of Brie and the great progress she is making here at New Song, especially on the inside.
